Gremlins Get the Word Out – eWaste & LESEC Collection Poster Boards

April 11, 2010

On this beautiful sunny Sunday we delivered the Green Gremlins eWaste Poster boards to the Lower East Side Ecology Center‘s collection event in Traver’s Park.  We arrived early, and saw that word had gotten out – many monitors, keyboards, towers and peripherals were already stacking up.  The Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC) sets up events with other organizations (Tekserve, the Department of Sanitation, PS 29, Jackson Heights Green Agenda) and collects all eWaste.  The materials are responsibly recycled, and information is wiped and shredded.  When you bring your eWaste to these events, you not only take care of a growing environmental problem, you ensure that the recycling process is done in the most responsible manner.  The Green Gremlins created poster boards for this and future events so that passers-by can read about the benefits of recycling as well the value in re-using electronics and making sure they last as long as possible.  Below are some images of the collection today, as well as pictures of our poster boards.

Update:  See this video about WeRecycle’s business at CNN Money.

Fun Contest for Re-Use!

April 11, 2010

The website INSTRUCTABLES is hosting a coffee cup re-use Challenge.  If you’ve purchased a coffee cup from Paradis or Think Coffee because you left your mug at home, consider making the most of it!   There’s a solar backpack prize.   “58 billion paper coffee cups are thrown in the trash each year. That’s a lot! We think that there are some better ideas for paper coffee cups than just tossing them out so we teamed up with the betacup to bring you the Coffee Cup Challenge! Enter your awesome idea for a paper cup reuse and win a solar-powered Voltaic backpack!   The rules are simple: submit a new Instructable that reuses a paper coffee cup in some way. You can use more than one cup and you can use other stuff along with it, but there has to be at least one cup used.”

NYC Stuff Exchange

April 9, 2010

GCS has seen some action on the Free-cycle Board!  If you are looking for places to share and get stuff, consider looking at the Freecycle bulletins in the South Hall and Orange Door Hallways.   The NYC Stuff Exchange is another great place to re-use and get electronics in working condition.  Its a part of the GREENYC program.
